Winter Smile

JD, lately you have been sleeping with a pal. Asbury has been in and out of your room for months now. Over the last few weeks though, he has really been content in your room. He takes a while to get comfortable and sometimes this annoys you but mostly you're OK with it. The other morning I went down stairs to get ready for work and as I walked by your door, you were cuddled up petting Az. I took this picture the other night around 11:00.

You had a great day on Friday as your class went on a field trip. The whole kindergarten took a Polar Express train ride from Dover, NH to Portland, ME. I took the day off to spend with Adam so Mom could go with your class on the trip. You both had so much fun. Santa came aboard the train and you got candy cane's and all sorts of other treats. Someone asked you if you wanted to sit with your friends or Mom and you chose to sit with Mom. I know this made her happy. On the way back you were able to go back to hang out with you buddies!

Adam, you and I had a very nice day too. We went outside and were able to build a cool snowman. I rolled the balls and you placed the eyes and nose all by yourself. Each day since you have been running over to the window, grabbing a chair and looking for him out the window. When we came in we played a lot of football! You enjoy throwing it as far as you can in the playroom. You have also been playing golf a lot. Funny, JD played golf a lot at this age too. You have also taken to blocks. You have learned how to build large structures and when it starts to get high, you get excited saying,"Wow, see?"

Addie, you have one of those smiles. Not many people have them. A smile that makes other people smile and lights up a room. It almost instantly makes you likeable. I know you aren't even two years old yet, but this smile will stick. I know it will. I talked with the president of my company once about, "Smiles that can get you places." I know how goofy that sounds, but it's true. I only know one other person to have a smile like that.

Saturday we watched a few holiday movies on TV. You are both still excited to watch the movies Nana sent up. One of them is very relaxing. You both just sit there and get tired. Mom and I like this one best! We also listened to lot of music on this day. We have been listening to Pondering Judd a lot lately. I saw them play a few weeks back and really liked them. We have had a few of their albums for a while. We have also been listening to Slaid Cleaves, Johnny Cash, Little River Band, Bob Dylan and some country stuff.

In the evening we decided to have Fondue for dinner. JD, this is one of your favorite meals to have. You enjoy putting raw meat into the oil to cook. You always ask if we can have this so we surprised you on this night. We just had beef and three dipping sauces, but it was so yummy. Adam, you were very careful with the flame and oil, and enjoyed dipping the beef and feeding me! This meal generally lasts a long time, and this night was no different. By the time we were finished it was bed time!

Sunday brought a pretty crazy Nor'easter. We got about a foot of snow and it came down hard. It was a great day to cuddle down and watch football! I went out very early in the morning to get milk and some other things and there wasn't a car on the road, including plows! I really can't imagine not having 4 wheel drive up here. It was kind of cool being out when no one else was out. Luckily the store was open and was able to get the stuff I needed!

We tried to go outside on this day but it was too cold and windy. We all got cold, especially you, Ad. You were saying, "Inside, please, please." Then we would get in and warm up and you would say,"Outside?" We had nachos and watched the Pats beat the Jets. It was a sloppy boring game but a win is a win. Two more for them to go undefeated!

Today, Tuesday, Grandie came down as she usually does on Tuesday's to spend time with Mom. When JD got home from school there was a food project waiting. Grandie and JD made a Gingerbread house! It looks so good! After dinner tonight JD asked if he and Adam good dive into it. Why not? I always see these houses sitting in people's living rooms and all the are, are decoration! By the time people want to eat them they are stale! JD, you were so nice to invite Adam to share with you. You both did some series damage on that little house!

Snowfall

Well I think its safe to say that we have seen just about every Christmas movie appropriate for kids, and even one that may not be appropriate. We have been setting aside a bit of time after dinner a few times a week for these movies. As a rule our TV doesn't go on after dinner but this time of year we have made an exception. Both of you enjoy these movies so much.

We have watched Rudolph, Frosty, and many others. Adam, each time the Mean Snowman comes to the screen in Rudolph you put your hands over your eyes and say, "Scarey." You then spread your fingers and start to peak through again until you are convinced he isn't coming back anytime soon. We are running very low on movies right now so Nana sent us a few in the mail. JD, one of these movies was about a snowman and there were no words, just music in the background. I think this may have been you favorite movie so far.

Over the weekend we enjoyed the first snowfall of the season. Adam, you do not like getting put into your snow suit, there is no way around it, you just don't like it. But I zipped you up and out we went. Mom had spent the prior night in Mass at Brooke's so it was just the three of us on this day.

We went outside in the morning on Saturday. Our big sled from last year popped and we got rid of all of the others as they had defects so we are left with just Adam's pull sled. I pulled you both around the yard for quite a while. We started out back and then went around to the small hill on the side. I think you both like snowball throwing more than anything else, though. Adam is learning that you actually have to pat down the snow into a ball shape before you throw it. He had many unsuccessful throws prior to learning this. JD enjoys throwing snowballs at his brother and I. And I have to say, I do like throwing them back!

We have gone outside during the nights a few times too. Asbury loves to play in the snow, he has since he was a puppy. When mom and I brought him home in January of 1999 there was snow on the ground and it seemed to stay for months. He loves to chase snowballs even though they are virtually impossible to find.

On Sunday night we all helped mom bake some cookies. We had one of those jar things with all of the ingredients inside and mom and I had a major sugar craving. JD, you bake with Grandie all the time so you cracked the eggs and helped to add in the ingredients. Adam, you did a great job of interrupting the process by sticking your hand in the mix and licking your fingers!

We rounded up Sunday night watching the Pat's beat the Steelers. Its been a pretty interesting year of football for the Patriots. They are one of the best teams ever and have a very good shot at going undefeated for the whole season. If they do they will be only the second team ever
to do so. Adam, when football comes on the TV, even just the highlights, you come to find me wherever I am in the house. You say, "Daddy, Daddy, F'Ball!" And then you motion for me to come with you. When we arrive you say, "Look" and point to the TV. You are so excited to show me, its like every time is the first!

The Celtics are off to a good start too. They are 12-0 at home this year and so exciting to watch. Its weird having basketball be relevant in Boston again. I'm enjoying it just as much as I had hoped I would.

We are supposed to get a Nor'easter this weekend, maybe a foot of snow. I really need to pick up some sleds somewhere. I wonder which one of you guys I'll get to shovel?

Tractors and Snowballs

Well its officially the Christmas Season!

Friday was your first real introduction to Christmas this year. We have been talking about it since Thanksgiving and the ads and movies have been on TV, but we hadn't yet gone to any real events. On this night I went to a UNH Hockey game with Chris, Chad, and Ashley. I have to say for hockey being my least favorite of the major sports, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this game. They played UMass Lowell, and for the whole game I wasn't quite sure who to cheer for. Being from Mass I kind of shifted to that end of things, but in the end UNH won. The stadium probably only seats about five thousand people which surprised me, but there was not a bad seat in the house. It was nice to be that close to the action.

While I was at the game Mom took both of you to a, "Christmas Stroll" right down in the center of South Berwick, where you met her friend Leanna and her daughter. Here you both made ornaments for the tree, played in one of the stores, and even met Santa. Mom told me that JD's eyes opened wide when Santa came by. It was literally freezing cold on this night. Adam was in his snow suit (VERY reluctantly) and Mom and JD were also bundled up tightly. JD, you talked about this night for most of the next morning.

On Saturday morning while we were getting ready for a Christmas Parade in Berwick, JD and I noticed bird outside that we didn't recognize. JD immidiately ran upstairs to get his bird book. We found that it was a, Downy Woodpecker. We must have watched it for about an hour while Adam was sleeping. We even got this picture.

Mom and Grandie were working at a craft fair in Eliot so the three of us went over to Chad and Ashley's for a cup of coffee before the parade. Now this day was even colder than the night before. It was 25 degrees with crazy wind...totally freezing. I thought for a minute about not taking you guys, but decided to give it a shot. Once again Adam was thrown reluctantly into his snow suit for this trip. JD thought it was funny that we had to where two pair of socks and many layers of sweatshirt tops under our jacket!

After our coffee we walked about a mile to the center of Berwick for the parade. It was SO fun! I have never been to a more "Maine" type of event since living up here. We determined that ANYONE could have been part of this parade, anyone at all! There were some cool floats like, trains, fire trucks,
and even a band. Then there were the backwoodsy floats, tractors, some decorated riding mowers (not kidding), and some people that were doing absolutely nothing. Needless to say we got some great laughs out of the whole thing and will not miss it next year. This will be a great winter tradition to help get us all in the spirit. Ash was big help when Ad decided he didn't want to get back in the stroller, helping me walk it all that way back to the house.

After the parade we went back to their house for some snacks. Mom called just about the exact time we got back and she was home from the fair. I left you both with Chad and Ash while I went to pick up Mom.
Both of you adore Chad and Ash. They are very realistic people and have excellent idea's to keep you guys entertained. Ashley decided it would be fun for you to make ornaments and decorate a small tree she brought out special for you and Chad broke out the video games which JD loved!

By the time Mom and I got back, Chris and Tara weren't too far behind. They arrived and we put together our plan for the evening. We have all tried to get into a Sunday dinner routine, maybe one or two times each month. Mom and I did dinner a few weeks ago and Chad and Ash volunteered this week. We had also planned to pick out our Christmas trees together on this night, something JD had been looking forward to all week!

It was about 5:30 by the time we all got out to get the trees. Now it was pitch black and FREEZING. So cold that my big gloves couldn't keep my fingers cold. Addie, you guessed it, back in the snowsuit! This was by far the coolest experience I have ever had getting a tree.

We drove to a tree farm, right next to JD's school and looked to be closed. No lights or signs or any signs of life. Mom decided to get out and knock on the door to find out if they were open and luckily they were. The guys working it told us that it was 18 degrees out, and that was without the wind! We had saw's and flashlights just in case because at this place people cut down there own trees rather than just picking them out at a lot. We walked way, way, out back. Chris had a head lamp and JD had a big flashlight to guide us on our way. Adam, you walked by yourself and followed the crowd as best you could. We finally came upon a forest of Christmas trees. The trunks were about four feet tall and they all varied in many shapes and sizes. Mom and I agreed upon a tree after barely looking at it. It was so cold we just wanted to chop it and get out of there! We never actually found out exactly what it looked like until the next morning. It was BY FAR the best tree we have ever picked out! It is the perfect height and so full!

After we left the tree place we went back to dinner at Chad and Ash's house. It was a great day. We all enjoyed spending time together and the food was excellent. Toward the end of the night, "Crazy Adam" came out. Ad, you were dancing and jumping, wrestling with Chad, and pushing around Chris. You were very tired and laughing at everything, we all got a kick out of you!

Sunday morning arrived and JD got us out of bed early. JD, you wanted to put up our Christmas stuff and did not want to wait! After we did some cleaning and Mom went shopping, sure enough it was time. Both of you went up to the attic with Mom to grab the decorations. We have about 4 large boxes of Santa's, snowmen, and all sorts of other stuff.

After you both put up the Santa 's and stuff we decided to tackle decorating the tree. Mom had tons and tons of ornaments from her childhood so she went through the box and pulled out the pieces she wanted
to put on the tree. You both have many ornaments too. Adam, you did a great job for your first time decorating the tree. JD is now an old pro and I would say the this is one of his favorite times of year!

Later in the evening, before bed, we watched one of my favorite Christmas movie's from when I was a kid, "Emmit Otter's Jug Band Christmas." We sat around with the tree lights, and the window lights on and truly enjoyed the end of the weekend together.

Monday was a surprise for JD as his school was cancelled due to snow! We got about six inches overnight and it was nice heavy, wet, snowball snow! Mom took you both outside where you threw snowballs at each other and went exploring around the yard. Adam, you loved your first snow adventure as a walking person! JD later in the day you even got to skiing outback down the small hill. Mom has been great in encouraging you do to this and she is a great skier herself. Hopefully this winter will bring many more fun memories!

"It's Cooold"

Last Wednesday was the day before Thanksgiving. I was able to get out of work early and met Hamer and Chad for a beer. The day before Thanksgiving is traditionally a nice day to go out and celebrate the holiday with friends. I missed going back to Millis to see family and friends this year but we all had a very nice time.

Thursday morning we woke up went straight up to Gray to Grandie and Pop Pops cabin. This year it was just the four of us, the two of them, and Uncle Mike. When we arrived we got settled and Grandie got out some markers and construction paper. JD and Grandie cut out some paper to create place cards so that everyone would know just where they were sitting for dinner. When Grandie went to pick up Mike at the airport, JD wrote every one's name on the cards and set their places.

Mom made her apple pie while Pop Pop made just about everything else. We had a rotisserie grilled turkey, mashed potato, a bean dish, and tons of other stuff. Just before we arrived Pop Pop told us how the turkey caught fire on the grill! It didn't effect the taste at all, but must have been quite the sight. Just before dinner Mom and Grandie had both prepared a toast and each were a bit emotional but a nice way to start the weekend.

Ad, you played on the rocking horse and with the toy garage for a good first part of the day. You really ride that horse well. You and the horse are quite proportional and it actually looks like you're riding a real horse when you get going. Both of you climbed the stairs and were looking down over the catwalk too. Adam, you thought this was so funny. JD was trying to get you in trouble by telling you to throw things over and down to the first floor!

By the time Mike arrived back we were almost ready to eat. We were informed a few weeks earlier that he is not going to move back to New England as we originally thought. This was bummer but I'm sure he's doing what's best for him and that is what's really important.

Mike and I watched quite a bit of college football this weekend, actually I think I watched more on that weekend than I have in years at one stretch. Both of you watched 101 Dalmatians after dinner, and after this Addie was promptly off to bed, and he was TIRED.

As Pop, Michael and I went back into the TV room to watch football, JD, Mom and Grandie started to play UNO. I wasn't quite sure what you guys where doing out there for so long and eventually I went out to see what was up. You asked if I wanted to play and I obliged. JD, you were played UNO like a true pro. You got little to no help the first night and for the rest of the weekend you got no help at all. You stayed up until 11:00 played UNO with the three of us. It was so fun to see you so concentrated and aware of the rules!

The next day, Friday, was very cold out, about 30 degrees! After breakfast Ad, JD and I went outside to throw around the football. This lasted all of about a half hour until we decided to go back in to get warm. We then rounded up Grandie and Mom and played some more UNO. On this morning we decided to play up to 200 points. JD, you won! Fair and square, you WON! I lost.. We all got a kick out of seeing you win. You followed all of the rules and you liked it best when you made one of us draw 4 cards!

Later in the day we all took a walk along the lake. It was a beautiful fall/winter day. Adam sat in the stroller and enjoyed the ride and JD took Mom's old bike for most of the way. It was very nice to get out and stroll around with everyone. When we arrived back at the cabin Adam was ready to get out of his seat. Uncle Mike took him for a ride on the bike and then the scooter!

Adam, you have talking more and more each week. This week you have been saying, "Go Outside", and "Its cooold", amongst other things.

The next morning JD, Michael, Frank and I did some outside exploring. JD and I started off down at the dock. The lake is so low that we could walk about 6 or 7 feet further out than is typical. We tried to break the ice with rocks and had contests to see how far the rocks could glide on the ice. From there Pop Pop took us on a hunt for deer and we walked the perimeter of their property. We noticed different types of trees and trees broken, stuck by lightning. JD, you had a lot of questions about the outdoors and what we were seeing.

We arrived home on Sunday. It was a very nice weekend to spend with the family. Grandy and Pop Pop always take such good care of us when we go up there. Their homemade meals are certainly amongst the best. You both had tons of fun. Good meals, good drink, and good company rarely disappoint.

Brruuuucceeeee!

The last two weeks have really kind of run together for me so I'll do my best to recap.

Last weekend both of you and I decided to go outside and do some burning. JD and I loaded up the wheelbarrow from the garage where we had quite a bit of scrap wood and wheeled it outback. JD, you helped me create a tee pee with the wood and crumpled up some paper so that we could light it up. It caught quick and we ended up burning wood for about 4 hours. While the fire burned Adam played in his sandbox with his shovels and trucks. We all played football and soccer while coming back to the fire to warm up every so often.

After the fire was extinguished we came inside. You both LOVE to color. I have probably written about this before and if I haven't, I should have. You both can sit at the table with our jar of markers and just color forever. JD, you have been sounding out words better and better each day, and writing the letters down as you go. Adam you scribble and scribble with all sorts of colors and say, "Daddy, see" about 100 times for each drawing you make!

JD, last weekend you also wanted to learn how to tie you shoes. One of the mornings you came over to me and said, "Dad, can you teach me how to tie my shoes today?" This was the same way you asked me how to ride your bike, and three hours later you learned how to ride. Same thing for the shoes. You concentrated very hard and it payed off quite quickly!

We also had Chad, Ash, Chris, Tara, and Chad and Caden over for dinner last weekend. Mom made her famous lasagna and other people brought salad and dessert. The food was great and the company even better. We are going to try and get into a routine with our friends about having Sunday dinners a few times a month. We're all very busy, but typically things slow down a bit in the winter.

This weekend was very special for JD and I. It was finally time to watch Bruce at the Garden in Boston! JD you and I went down to Nana's on Sunday morning and arrived just before 11 am. Grampie's new dog, "Brick" was there. He is a little boxer. This is the first time you have ever really dealt with a puppy. He was very cute and loved to play. He thought you were a little puppy and jumped on you and tackled your legs! You didn't like when he nipped you but you dealt with it very well! Brick will be a nice new addition to the family!

Grammie and Grampie came over later in the day for lunch. It was nice to chat with Grampie about the Celtics and Patriots. He used to have season tickets when the Celts were great in the 80's so it was fun to get his take on how he likes them now. Grammie is so getting frail, but she was in good spirits. She wanted to help Nana clean up but her body had other ideas. I know this was weighing on her mind. You sat with Grammie and Nana and went though a toy catalog and discussed Christmas gifts! You enjoyed this and we enjoyed watching you!

Finally 3:30 rolled around and it was time to pick up Cauf and Denise to head into Boston. We met Brown and Benoit at the T and went in from there. We arrived first at Hurricane O'Reilly's. They were pumping The Boss out the door and there looked to be tables inside, so we went in and planted ourselves here for a few hours. You had an awesome time talking to Jeff, Benoit and Cauf. You couldn't get over the HUGE TV they had on the wall. This was a long time for you in one restaurant and you enjoyed every minute.

Later in the night I got a call from my cousin Kim who was with Tiff and Uncle Don right next door at Boston Beer Works. We paid up and went next door to say hello to them. After talking with them we found that they had seats in the very row in front of us!! Donnie is the biggest fan I know and certainly contributed to my initial interest in Bruce. It is always great to catch up and spend time with them.

From there it was time to find our seats. We were seated way up in the nose bleed section of the Garden but you loved riding up all of the escalators. You really wanted to get a concert shirt on this night, but I had a hard time justifying 35 bucks for a kids T shirt! Grampie and Tiff gave you money to put towards the shirt and you were so happy to pick it out. Bruce switches up his set lists each night but the first song is currently your favorite, Radio Nowhere. We had to wait in line for the shirt for quite a while and as we were waiting you said, "C'mon Dad, I don't want to miss Radio Nowhere!" I assured you that we had plenty of time.

After visiting Donnie, Kim and Tiff at their close by seats, we took ours and waited for the show to begin. Just as we sat down and started to talk about the Celtic banners on the ceiling, the whole place went black! All of sudden we heard Bruce say, "Is there anybody alive out there?!!" You climbed up to stand on your seat so you could see but you looked a little scared. I don't think I realized how overwhelming it would initially be for you. Twenty thousand people, two giant screens, and truly loud rock and roll music. You mentioned how loud it was but you loosened up by song three, your other favorite, "Lonesome Day." Though out the whole show you clapped and clapped.

In the bars, on the street, and in the Garden people kept coming up to you and saying how cool it was that you where there. They would ask what your favorite song was and you would rattle off the names to three or four. Most people were so surprised and you couldn't figure out why. Honestly, I couldn't either.

I know that anyone can listen to whatever type of music they want to but I sometimes I don't get why everyone doesn't listen to Bruce. The message, the power, the realism, that's what people should get out of music. I know that other bands have this too, but none as pure as Springsteen. I am always searching and listening to new stuff and haven't stumbled across anything even close, maybe U2, but... Anyway, I wanted to share this with you (and hopefully Addie) before Bruce gets too old and stops touring. I know that there's a strong possibility you wont even remember that night, but maybe you'll remember the feeling of being at your first rock show with your Dad..

After the show you laughed and laughed with the boys on the train back to Riverside Station. I watched you and could tell that you had such a nice time. There was nothing you weren't included in all night long by everyone you encountered. By the time we got back to Nans you were dead asleep. I put you in bed and just before you went to sleep you said, "Daddy, I had so much fun tonight." So did I, J.

Cool Fall Days

JD, each Thursday of the week, is your day for show and tell at school. Mrs. Hill told us that the kids are allowed to "Pass" on show and tell if they chose to do so, but you haven't done that yet. Last Thursday you chose to show you're favorite, "Magic Tree House" book, "Pirates." You brought in the book and talked about the map inside. You told the class about how sometimes at home you make maps and hunt for treasure too!

Adam, you have been a chatter-box as of late. The last two to three weeks especially. You've been repeating everything you can, and trying to repeat words that you can't yet pronounce. You're favorite new thing to do is to walk into the a room, look at Mom or I and say, "C'mon", while motioning your arm for us to follow. You have also learned how to turn off and on the lights in the big room. This made for a dark dinner last weekend!

Friday night, Chad, Chad, Chris and I went out for some drinks and to watch the Celtics opener (they won!). JD, stayed up a bit to see Ashley and Tara as they were coming over to spend some time with Mom.

Saturday the weather was awful. It poured and poured and was very windy outside. Adam has enjoyed playing ball in the house lately. Mom doesn't like this, but sometimes when she is upstairs I play with you, Ad. You have learned how to throw very well. You try hard to catch, but that will come later. You have also started to learn how to play with the blocks in the playroom. Up until a few weeks ago, you enjoyed crashing our buildings, but now you have started to put block on top of block. Your favorite activity is still simply to color though. You do this for hours some days.

JD, your teacher has been giving us two books each week to read and talk about. You are doing a great job at learning how to read. This week we read about a Fiesta and Snow Days. You have really done a good job at sounding out letters and creating words. The other night I was cleaning up dinner and you got a piece of paper and started copying words off of the jars in the fridge. You are excited to learn how to read and it has been fun to watch.

Football Sunday came quick this week. The Pats were playing the Colts for the biggest regular season game of the year. The three of us went outside pretty early. The sky had cleared and it was still a bit wet on the ground but it was a beautiful, cool fall day. We brought out the football and played passer/receiver in the side yard. We pretended we were Tom Brady and Randy Moss. Adam you were right in the middle of things, running after the ball and throwing it with all of your might.

After football we moved to the basketball hoop. Adam, if I had to chose a favorite sport of yours at this young age, I would have to say it's basketball. Each time we go outside you walk over to the garage and want me to open it so that you can grab a basketball. You then shoot on your little hoop, or back up to me so that I can pick you up and you can dunk the ball in the big hoop. Lately you have even tried to do some dribbling!

We also ventured down to the beat up old horse stable, the boy's clubhouse. You both climbed up the ladder to the loft and peaked in. JD, you liked climbing the fence to get to the stable while I carried Ad on my shoulders. You both played in here for a good half hour. JD, you talked about how you want to have this be your, "Tree house." How you want to have your pals sleep over in the loft when you get older!

All in all it was a great weekend. So nice to see the sun come back on Sunday and we are doing our best to soak up what we can before the snow hits us. One of the nicest parts of this weekend for me was watching the two of you play ball together. I had to run into the house to grab something and on the way out I watched you guys for a minute. Throwing the ball back and forth, watching you run and laugh and fight for the ball. It was nice for me to see.

Champs, Carving, and Bam Bam

Well the Red Sox did it again! Its hard to believe that they won ANOTHER World Series. JD you and I stayed up late on Saturday. JD, you told me that your teacher didn't think it was a good idea to stay up late to watch the Red Sox, so you were a bit hesitant at first. I told you that I thought it would be OK since you had no school on Sunday (not to mention you've stayed up late for all of the others!).

This has been a great season for the Sox and for you and I as fans. You got to know just about all of the players, we saw a game at the Fens, and to top it off they won it all. The World Series was pretty uneventful other than the fact that the Sox were in it. They won in four games with no problem. The final game was pretty tense as they only won by one run. I must say they seemed to have it all at the end of the ALCS and into the Series. Pitching, hitting, defence, it was quite the sight. They have some great young talent that should show some promise for next year. So long to the Res Sox for 2007. Adam, maybe next year to take you to a game???

Saturday brought about the end of our soccer season, JD. It was pouring in the morning and the final game was cancelled. We went to the gym at your school for an awards ceremony at 9:00. Here we announced all of the kids names over the sound system and you all got to come up and get a medal! I had a blast coaching. All of the kids were great and it was so fun getting to know some of the kids you see at school each day. I'm not sure what sports are coming up over the winter. Maybe we'll put you back in karate, or find a league at the gym?

When we arrived home, Mom and Auntie Brooke took off for Portsmouth. Brooke stayed over the night before and they were off the shop for art or something. While Ad took his nap, JD and I carved a pumpkin. Actually I didn't do anything but draw the face, JD, you did the rest. We have a great little dull knife, perfect for a pumpkin. You carved the entire thing all by yourself. You were so proud and it came out great. When Ad woke up we immediately cooked up the seeds and a feast while we colored Halloween pictures at the table. This went on for a long...long...long time!

Sunday we woke up and went for a nice walk at Wagon Hill. It was a beautiful, sunny fall morning. Adam, you walked just about the entire way all by yourself. You like to call for my attention before you complete a task lately. For instance on this day, you would say, "Daddy, daddy, daddy," and I would look over to see you kicking the leaves! You also enjoyed throwing the rocks in the water and climbing with your big bro on the abandoned bridge.

We came home to watch the Pats destroy another opponent by forty-something points. This might be one of those seasons you hear about years from now. They truly look unstoppable. We have also been continuing our weekly dancing tradition. We listen to music all the time and on this day, Adam broke out some new moves!

Tuesday finally came and it was time to Trick or Treat! JD, you looked great in your Jack Sparrow costume and Ad was the best "BAM BAM Rubble" around. Perhaps the only BAM BAM, but nevertheless! We got you both dressed and headed down to the South Berwick parade. Mom, Grandie and I accompanied you both through the parade around town. Adam, you didn't know what to think about all the strange costumes and flashlights. You spent the parade portion on my shoulders while JD, Grandie, and Mom took in the crowd.

We went ALL OVER South Berwick. Adam, you went to many houses with the three of us and did almost all of the walking by yourself. JD, you must have hit 30 houses. You came home with a TON of candy. You both emptied your candy bags out on the dinner table to checkout out all of your goods. You must have had every type of candy bar going, JD even got some popcorn.

This was the first time that both of you were able to enjoy trick or treating together. Adam you followed your brother around town and when you couldn't see him cuz of the dark you would holler at the top of your lungs, "JD, JD!" JD even got you candy at some of the houses you couldn't go to. It was a pretty special night, and nice that Grandie came along. She made both of your costumes by hand! Ad, thanks for the candy along the way, I didn't think you would miss those five or ten pieces!

Bird, Boggs, and Grogan

Friday night my friend Slug came down from VT to spend the night. He was looking to get away for a little bit and was looking forward to spending some time with you guys too. I left work early on Friday and we went out for a drink or two. When we arrived back home JD was waiting up for us with Mom. The three boys went outside to the porch to listen to some music and smoke cigars. JD, you didn't smoke a cigar but enjoyed listening to Dylan and Van with us.

The next morning we were up and out for a 10:00 Soccer game. JD, you came away with two goals on this day. This was the second to last game of the year, and I must say, it's bitter sweet. Slug came to watch as did Grandie and PopPop. We all came back to the house and had sandwiches and a nice lunch together. Shortly after I brought Slug back to his car in Dover and he was off. It was nice to see him. He doesn't get back to Millis much so I'm sure he had a nice time here too.

In the afternoon we played in the playroom pretty much all day. The ground was wet from overnight rain so outside was kind of out of the question. Adam, you have been playing with the skeet ball game a lot lately. Sometimes you just walk into the playroom and turn on the music to that game then leave the room. Its just great to hear that music piping through the house!

JD, on this day we built mostly with Legos. We haven't played with Legos in quite a while. I forgot how relaxing it is to get lost in building with those things. I see that it relaxes you too. After dinner Ad went off to bed and Mom to work and JD and I prepared to watch game 6 of the ALCS between the Sox and the Indians. I must admit they reeled me in again! They were down 3 games to 1, then won game five. They got me believing! J, I explained to you how the series works and you had many questions about my explanation. Throughout the season you have become very good at reading the scoreboard area on the TV screen. You can tell how many outs there are, what the score is, and how many balls and strikes that the batter is working.

This night was my favorite sports experience yet with you. Maybe not better than actually going to Fenway, but certainly close. You were so into the game that it made me that much more interested and involved. There was a time in the beginning of the game where the based were loaded for JD Drew, who was just not been performing all year. He hit a Grand Slam and you and I simultaneously jumped out of our chairs! We cheered, talked, and ate Cheetos together on this night. I let you stay up til 10:00 and by then the game was decided anyway. They home team won! You were ready for bed and out like a light by the time your head hit the pillow. Thanks for this night, JD. I look forward to the day when AD can understand this sport and stay up late with us.

The following morning after watching many Sox highlights, Mom and I packed you guys up and we went to Mt Agamenticus for a hike. This is the perfect hike for kids. Its basically a walk up a hill that happens to be in the woods. There is a great view once you reach the top. Adam you enjoyed the ride on my shoulders the whole way up and down. You talked the whole way waving to people passing us by and noticing birds, planes and other dogs.

JD, you and Asbury lead the way up. I swear, I think you ran up the whole entire Mountain, Az by your side. Asbury made sure you didn't go too far without being by your side. Mom and I noticed on this hike that Az is getting old. He got tired so much easier than he ever did before. By the end he was panting pretty good. His tail was wagging the whole time though as he loves to be outside with his family. He's a good dog and he loves us all.

After our hike we came home to play outside for most of the day. We hadn't played baseball in quite a while but took out the bases and balls on this day. You haven't missed a step with your swing but you fatigued early because I kept you up the night prior. Addie, you came out too and practiced your throwing. You are starting to get some serious zip on the ball!

Later this night was game 7 of the ALCS. I haven't been this nervous for a game in a long time. Even though they won it all in 2004, I still don't trust em'! Its funny JD was alive in 2004 and we watching some games in MA and some in ME. I remember telling him about the bade luck the Sox have had for generations and how lucky we were to be witnessing the Sox in the Series. I had a similar conversation with you tonight, JD. You understand a lot more now, obviously.

Almost all of my great sports memories growing up are with my Dad. Bird, Boggs, Buckner, Grogan, McHale, The Rocket, The Chief, those are the guys my memories are made up of. I can just see you developing small memories of Schilling, Papi, Manny, Brady, and others. ALL of my Red Sox memories inevitably didn't end well. They didn't win much when I was young, and worse then that they always reeled you in and broke your "HAAHT!"

The thing that is funny about this to me is that things for you guys, at the ages of 5 and 2 are already better than they ever were for me, my dad, or the entire life of my Grampa as far as the Sox go! I have to say though there was an unspoken camaraderie between Sox fans for a long time. You could even tell a true fan by a glance that someone would give you who might also be wearing the hometown cap. The caps are camouflaged now amongst pink hats and towel wavers. Casual fans who happened to jump on the bandwagon cuz its the, "Thing to do." Its still fun to be a fan but there was something to say about the years of the Curse. Tomorrow night is game one of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies. GO SOX!

The Negotiator

Last Thursday we had Uncle Michael and his friend Jen stay over for the night. Mike was up from Florida and is looking to move back to New England. He had an interview on Friday and his 30th BDay was also a day or two away. He arrived in the afternoon and was able to spend some time with both of you, Mom, and Grandy.

As always it was nice to see Mike. He always makes time to spend with both of you. Ad, he left for FL after you were born so you are still getting to know each other. He did end up getting the job in Mass and should be back before Thanksgiving. It was a great idea for him to spend a bit of time in Florida but we will all be happy to welcome him back.

The next morning we had our weekly soccer game. Once again we won! JD, you scored right from the kickoff on this week. It was so cool and very funny. You gave the ball a big BOOT and into the net it went. Soccer has been great for both of us this year. I have met quite a few people and you are able to see your friends outside of school. You and Owen are by far the two best players on our little team. We have had to put you both on defense for the final 15 minutes or so as to not run the score up too much.

After the game we went down to Nana's house. Mom stayed home as she had to work on Saturday night and the three of us went south. When we arrived JD found a few new toys and Adam found the snacks! We played with my old, old, "Vibrating Football Game" for quite a while. Adam wanted to play basketball so we did that too.

By the time Nan and Grampie came home Addie had gone to bed and JD and I were watching some weird show on Nick. I went out to Cauf's for the night to watch the game with he and Mikey. JD, you watched a few other shows on TV and had popcorn with Nana!

The next day Adam woke up at 5:30! I was (reluctantly) up with him and we went to the playroom to watch a movie. Ad, you cuddled with me for over an hour which made me think that perhaps you woke up early even for you! JD was up by 7:00 to finish the movie with us. We then went upstairs and had breakfast on the couch with Nana.

By about 10:30 we were at Oak Grove Farm and onto the playground. JD, you hadn't been here for a long time, in fact you didn't remember that we used to live within walking distance. Adam, you loved climbing, running, and swinging in the swing while Nana pushed. You must have stayed in the swing for a half hour. There was another little girl there that you ended up walking up to, checking out, and eventually giving a big hug! Come to find out she lived right down the street from Nan.

THEN we went off to Tangerini Farm to pick out some pumpkins! JD, you were so excited to see all of the pumpkins. You grabbed one quickly and by mistake you ripped off the stem! I was right next to you and told you not to let anyone see. You were so funny and dropped it while looking around to make sure you were in the clear!

Adam, by this time you were TIRED but such a trooper. We walked all over and you kept picking out the littlest pumpkins, the ones you could lift. You tried to say the word, "Pumpkin" but that was easier said then done. You walked around with Nana, while JD picked out his own pumpkin to bring home. When it was all said and done, Nan treated us to 4 pumpkins..

After Ad's nap on this day, we went to Caufs to watch the Pats crush the Cowboys. Here we saw Jimmy, Noah and Jordan, Jeff, Julie, and Ryan, and Mark, Denise, and Riley. Adam you loved chasing the Kitty up the stairs. Throughout the night you kept coming back to me saying, "Kitty? Kitty?" That cat did come back at some point but its stay was short lived.

JD, you played with Jordan all night. At the half we all went outside and the two of you played soccer together. Jim went outside with all of the kids while some of us stayed inside. Mom arrived here too as she was in Lexington having brunch with Brooke. She and Adam left around 7:00 and JD and I stayed.

JD we had quite the adventure the next day. We woke up at 5:30 and had to be home for 8:00 so that you could be at school on time. Mom and I weren't sure what to do here. We certainly didn't want you to be tired for school the next day, but you wanted to stay with the boys and watch the game the prior night. I got to thinking and thought that most parents would have opted to have their kid home in their bed so that school the next day would be no problem. I thought that it would fun for you and I to have an adventure the next day. To leave early and see how it turns out!

On the ride home that morning you pointed out the sunrise, we talked about the Patriots, we talked lots about school, and we laughed and laughed. I thought you might fall asleep on the way home, in fact I encouraged it. This was so much better than doing what most people would do. It was special and I think you might even remember it. We made it back with no problem and I waited for the bus with you that morning. We continued to chat about the weekend and that school might bring for the day. I enjoyed sharing this small adventure with you and I'm sure there will be more to come..

Last night, Wednesday, Mom and I met with your teacher for a teacher/parent conference. We were both a bit nervous going in. Not that we expected a "Bad" report but simply because it was the first time we had EVER had one of these. Your teacher, Mrs Hill, could not be more pleased with you. She told us how helpful you are with the other students. How you negotiate, not only for yourself, but for other kids too. That you are perceptive, academically smart, and socially advanced. She actually said that she hopes that you rub off on other students that aren't as in touch with their feelings.

Needless to say the ride home from this meeting was emotional from Mom and I. I can't remember that last time I was overtaken with emotion so quickly. As I was sitting there I saw in your teachers eyes how much she enjoyed having you in her class. Not once did she indicate even the smallest bit of negativity. She said that once kids understand the social aspect of kindergarten and being in a class, the rest follows. She told us that you are already there.

I often wonder what happens after you leave for the day to go to school. You are typically good about telling us what goes on each day but to get this type of feedback from your teacher is special. You are a thoughtful, intelligent, perceptive, energetic boy. I love you so very much.

Big Spiders and Chicken Nuggets

Fall has officially arrived! The cool air has moved in especially in the mornings and at night. Great sleeping weather of 40 degrees has finally taken over. The leaves have changed and hopefully the hot weather is gone for good.

This past weekend however, we had what will hopefully be our last 80 degree day. Saturday was hot and pretty humid. We started the day off with another soccer game for JD. JD, you scored two goals on this day and once again our little blue team whooped the competition. Grampa made the trip up and arrived around 8:30. He had a great time watching you play.

After our game we all came back to the house and Grampa had some sun flower seeds with us while we hung out, outside. We came in later to discuss the beating that the Red Sox put on the Angels the night prior. They would eventually sweep the series, 3-0. You played some computer games with Grampa before he left. You were happy to have had him here to watch your game.

After he left, Mom put Addie down for a nap and you and I went outside to play basketball and ride around on your scooter a bit. We also put up a tire swing. Mom wasn't very fond of this idea initially but she came around (after it was already hung!). You had a great time swinging on the swing until you got stuck. I was in the back yard and all of a sudden I heard, "Daaaaaaad!" I ran out front and you were swinging with one foot stuck inside and one slapping against the ground!

Adam, you were a tired boy on this day. You slept for about 3.5 hours and by the time you woke up, the rain had started pouring. You and JD went upstairs chasing each other all over and wrestling for a good hour. Mom and I talked about this being the first time that you have both really played together.

This behavior carried on right through Sunday. All morning you were both upstairs, running and yelling. Once in a while one of you would let out a screech, but for the most part we let you work it out. It has been so fun to watch you both enjoy the company of one another. Tonight Adam was throwing the ball to JD and JD would pick up the ball and walk it back so that Adam could chuck it again. We also did quite a bit of dancing on this night. With Bruce's album now out for over a week, it's been the record of choice at home..

The weekend wouldn't have been complete without a few trips to the playground at Hussey School. We arrived here after one of Adams naps. Adam takes after his mom when waking up from his naps, he doesn't like to be talked to,fussed with, or even looked at. Adam, you slept for such a long time that we had promised JD we would go to the park when you awoke.
When you woke up we put you in your booster seat for some quick chicken nuggets before we took off. You didn't want to eat..then you did..then you didn't. We put you in the car and you threw a fit! We couldn't figure out why, and finally you pointed inside and said, "Chicken." We gave you the plate with chicken on it and off we went to the playground. When we got to the playground you were NOT giving up your plate. Mom and I were not in the mood for a battle so you walked all around the playground with your fragile dinner plate and your chicken nuggets!

This week we also took out all of our Halloween decorations. We have quite a few decorations for one of the less important holiday's. Big spiders, skeletons, haunted houses, sticky pumpkins, you name it! Adam you DO NOT like the big spider decoration. For the first night we had it up you wouldn't walk by it without taking your eye off it. JD, surprisingly enough, you decided to chase Adam all around the house with the spider before it was hung! Needless to say Adam didn't find this too amusing.

JD is very excited about Halloween this year. You are planning on being a Pirate! Adam, we have always joked that you are just like Bam Bam from the Flintstones cartoon. We are leaning towards dressing you as him this year. You are big and strong for a little guy and with your bleach blond, toe-head hair, it's pretty much a no-brainer!

Fall is my favorite time of the year. Even though the days are noticeably getting shorter and wind it picking up, its simply a more comfortable time of year. We ended the weekend with our 3rd straight Sunday S'mores night. Adam, you're really getting the hang of the process. Not necessarily the 'making s'mores' process but the 'hunting for the chocolate' process. You have managed to sneak extra chocolate each of these nights! There is truly no place like New England in the Fall.

Hat-Trick

Last week brought an exciting soccer game on Saturday. Mom had a craft fair so Chris came over to watch Adam so I could focus my full attention on coaching. I had to make sure I was focused and thinking strategically at all times! JD, you got the first hat-trick of your young career. 3 Goals! You were so excited after the first goal. You got the ball on a breakaway and put it right passed the goalie! The next two were a little less dramatic but still just as impressive! You aren't comfortable working the ball to your left. I'm hoping you don't have the same bit of uncoordination that I have with my feet. I was never a good soccer player when I was forced to play the field, I think that's why I enjoyed playing in the net so much. I will try to work with you a little bit, but if you aren't into it, I certainly won't push..

After the game we came back and hung out with Chris for a while. Adam, you did very well, shedding no tears at all after I left. Chris said that for the first half hour you wouldn't stay in the same room as him and would peak around the corner to see what he was doing. By the time it was time for him to go, you were wrapped around his leg!

After Adam's nap we went to JD's school to take advantage of the huge playground located behind the school. As soon as we got to the parking lot and I got Ad out of his seat, you were both off and running to the other side of lot and down the hill, right to the playground. JD, you seem to be very comfortable at school but I think that the more we go down there to hang out on the grounds, you become even more accustom to your surroundings.

Adam, you like climbing all the way up to the highest platform and sliding down the twisty slide, while JD has been a fan of the jungle gym and swings. Adam, for a little guy I'm surprised that you don't mind the height of the slide. It's a little nerve racking watching you go up but I don't want to discourage you either. Sometimes you climb right up the slide itself! JD you have done so well with the monkey bars. You don't seem to have a problem going from one side to the other. You also like to be pushed very high on the swings. Adam, you like to sit on my lap while we swing together.

We stayed here for almost and hour and a half and then we headed to the market to grab some burgers. I got three huge beef patties and three BIG potatoes. I microwaved the potatoes to cook them through and them marinated them in veggie oil and sea salt. From there I toasted them on the grill along with the burgs. Needless to say, you both ate the entire meal!

Sunday morning we were up early. I made pancakes for us and we listened to Bruce's new songs on Youtube as they weren't studio released yet. Then we went to the soccer field for a few hours and practiced turning the ball to the left and shooting quickly. Adam, you enjoyed playing very much. Typically during the games and practices you aren't allowed to come on the field so this was quite a treat for you!

For the rest of the day we did a bunch of things. We went to the playground again, played basketball, football and baseball, and hooked up JD's makeshift T-Ball swing machine. After dinner we had s'mores over the fire. We are kind of starting a Sunday night s'mores tradition!

Tuesday night, Bruce's new disc, "Magic" was released. JD, you and I stayed up and listened to it front to back. I'm sure we will hear this over and over and over as the concert nears.

The Red Sox start the ALDS series tonight against the Angels. JD you watched the first four innings with me. We saw Yuke and Papi go deep and they are currently leading 4-0 and Angles have Zero's across the board in the 7th! I tried to keep you up, Addie, but you needed to hit the rack. Maybe next time?

"NO!"

JD, you have continued to make progress at school. This week you have been sitting with your friends Bethany and John on the bus. You have all talked about getting together sometime soon, but you're not sure where they live. The both seem very nice. You have called John your new, “Best Friend” and Bethany is the mysterious girl who told you that she loves you. There are three girls on the bus that have been teasing you about being cute!

Mom and I thought it would be nice to have some of your new friends from school over to the house to play sometimes soon. Tonight when I came home from work, I saw you and Mom sitting at the table and Mom had a great big smile on her face. I asked her what was funny and she told me that you had started to make your list of friends to come to house to play. She looked at me and said, "Well Jim this was a good idea, we are on kid number 13!" Needless to say, we may have to make some cuts!

Adam, your vocabulary has taken off over the last week and half or so. Your favorite
word, of course, is "NO." You truly have a mind of your own. The transition of JD going to school has been a bit challenging for you. Although Mom keeps you active during the day, its impossible to keep you as active as JD did! You're favorite foods right now are chicken, black beans, yogurt, and all meat pizza! You will really eat just about anything as long as its not moving!

This weekend we started off with a soccer game at 9:00. Saturday was picture day, so we arrived at 8:15. JD, you spent the majority of the time playing with Owen and Amy prior to the game. By the time we started, it began to drizzle just a bit and the parents were hoping that the rain would hold off. It did, but it was a tough day for our team. Tough day. We got smoked. The first loss of the season. We're now 2 and 1, but again, who's counting...

After our game the four of us and Asbury headed up to Gray to see Grandie and Pop Pop. I helped Pop clean out his storage unit and move some things from the cabin to his new office above the garage. While I did this, Grandie put Addie down for a nap and JD and Mom took out the boat. The lake was low so Mom was a bit nervous but she went anyway. I have always loved her fearless side and its nice to see it pop up every so often. It has been important for her to spend time with you, JD. She misses you throughout the day.

We had one of Pop Pops best dinner's ever. I say that knowing that there have been quite a few good meals over the years. We had steak, corn, salad, potato's and pie. The steak and potatoes were cooked special and I completely enjoyed them.

After you guys went off to bed, the adults watched a movie. Some murder movie, it was OK. Afterwards Grandie and I stayed up late and were able to catch up. We have similar views on things and I enjoy and value her comments and support.

The next day we were up and out early as I had to interview a candidate in Dover at Noon. .JD, you came with me to the office while I met with this women. You kept yourself busy by playing computer games and stealing a soda from the fridge!

We arrived home around 2:00 and watched the Patriots whoop the Bills while doing some yard work in between. JD helped me load the wheelbarrow of grass clippings and Adam took a ride with me on the mower.

After dinner it was time for S'mores! The four of us went outback and lit a small fire as to roast some marshmallows for the s'mores Mom had a "Three Prong" stick and helped you both put your treats together. At this point, JD, you are pretty much a pro. I don't think I had a s'more until I was in my 20's you have probably had more in your lifetime than I have had in mine!

Oh, and we DID get Bruce tickets! I struck out as they sold out in seven minutes but Benoit got six and will share two of them with us. We already have a pretty big crew to go with. I can't wait, and I know you will enjoy it too, JD. This will be my 19th time seeing him in concert. I hope so much that he comes around a few more times so that I can bring both of my boys together...

"Knucklehead!"

Well, last week brought JD's first full week of school and Adam's first week home without a big brother to answer to for the majority of the time. You both missed each other very much. Adams feelings were a little more obvious that JD's. On Wednesday of last week, when JD's bus came down the street Adam started to dance in the driveway. Mom wasn't the only person who noticed your dance moves Adam, JD's bus driver alerted him that you were dancing too! When JD got off the bus you ran up to him for a great big hug.

You have always been quite the dancer but this week you have been especially ready to shake your thing. You've been trying to say the word, "Song" and pointing to the computer. This is where we listen to all of our music. You have been seen dancing on a the dinner table, on the deck, in your booster seat, outside on the sandbox, and just about everywhere else that I can think of!

JD, it's still very strange for me to realize that you are off at school for 8 hours of the day. You have met three people on the bus that you have been playing with at recess, you know everyone in your class, and you see you soccer and t-ball friends regularly at lunch. So far things have started off well. In talking to other parents I have learned that school has not gone as smooth for some others. I have learned that kids have been put in timeouts and in some cases parents have already been called at home because of behavior issues. You mentioned to me that some of the boys in your classroom have been reprimanded for fooling around or for hitting. The feedback we have received from your teacher has been SO positive. I have been so proud of the way you have handled some situations. You told me how a boy tried to come into the bathroom stall, when you were there and you said, "I'm in here, you knucklehead." You told me about how a girl on the bus did something rude to you and you kept quite and decided not to tattle on her. (You also told me today that the same girl told you that she loves you and that her friend said that she has a crush on you!) You told me how some kids were pushing each other on the playground and I asked you what you would do if they were to push you. You said that you would tell them to stop. I suggested that you call them a butthead too. You replied,"I wouldn't do that because I don't want to get in trouble." Hmm..

I have really seen you grow up this week. I know you're still a little boy of only five years old, but I have seen you tested in different ways in your new big world. I couldn't be happier with the boy you are. I expect that we'll see ups and downs this year, but I'm confident that you will be just fine with the tools you have acquired. You and I have talked about the ongoings of each day since you have been in school in great detail. The decisions that you have made in different situations may be small to you, but they are not small to me.

Last weekend we had a soccer game scheduled to be played on Saturday that got cancelled due to heavy rain. The night before we did manage to get practice in and scrimmage another team. I have to say, our team is coming together. We're 2 and 0 but who's keeping score?

Nana and Grampie were in town for a soccer game so they stopped by for a few hours on Saturday afternoon. They hadn't been up in a long time so it was nice to have them. You did a puzzle and played games with Nan while Grampie and I watched the Irish get the butts handed to them on TV. Later in the afternoon the clouds parted and we were able to go outside to play basketball and go for a walk with Nana while Grampie rested. I enjoyed talking with my Mom on this day and I'm grateful to have her love and support. She brought a breath of fresh air for me with her to Maine..

Sunday Mom, Ad, JD, and I met Grama, Grampa, Meg, Greg, Liv, and Dave at Canobie Lake Park. This is the second straight year we have gone and what a difference compared to last year! This year Dave and Adam went on quite a few rides. When we arrived, JD took Livy's hand and they went on a kiddie ride. JD, after you're ride with Liv, you said that you would take Adam on a ride. You took him on his first ride ever! You wanted no part in being in the kiddie section but you spent at least an hour going on rides with all of the younger kids.

Adam, you cried a little. Not when being put on the ride, but when being taken off! You could have stayed on those rides all day. Dave was the same way. It was quite comical for others to witness I'm sure. Each time a ride ended and Dave and Ad noticed their parents walking toward them to pull them off they both got upset! You even went on one of the medium level rides. The helicopter ride where you pull in the bar and the copter goes high up and when you let out the bar it comes down. You and JD rode this ride together. It went about 14 feet in the air! JD, you were so patient with the kids but finally you got your turn too. You rode one of the roller coasters, you drove the old fashion car, and you went on your favorite ride, The Flume. You had been asking all day if we could go on the flume but by the time we got down there the line was SO long. Mom made good case for you saying that this is your very favorite ride and that we should brave the line for you. We did and it was SO fun. You were a little apprehensive going up the huge hill but, as always, you enjoyed it very much.

My favorite part of the day came at the one of the game counters. You wanted to play the basketball game, where you shoot a regulation size ball into one of those very small hoops. There were a bunch of young teen age kids spending quite a bit of money trying to sink a bucket, shot after shot. Grampa asked you if you wanted to play and bought three balls for you to shoot. On your first shot you sunk it, swish! It was awesome! You won a Celtics hat! The look on the faces of those other boys was priceless.

All in all it was a very nice day with new experiences for the little kids. This weekend we have a soccer game at 10:00, the same time that Bruce tickets go on sale.

How am I going to work this one?

The Yellow Submarine

JD, Wednesday of this week was one of your biggest milestone's to date. Not only was it your first day of Kindergarten, but your first day riding the bus from home to school all by yourself.

About a week ago you, Mom and I went to the Hussey school for your orientation. We met your teacher, Mrs. Hill, saw the gym and your classroom, and you got a chance to ride the bus! You were the first one on the bus that day and didn't even say goodbye to Mom or I. I sensed you taking a deep breath and just doing it. I was so proud of you, but I found myself taking a deep breath too. You are growing up. You don't need me to get you to school and you are learning how to do things on your own. You'll be making your own observations and decisions at school. I wonder how you'll do, but I know you'll do well. You are a sweet, caring, energetic, sensitive, boy. I couldn't be more proud of little person you have grown in to.

So along came Wednesday. I had been thinking of this day for quite a while. Wondering how you would do, and how Mom and I would do too! I woke you up at about 7:15 on this day and you put on the outfit that you and Mom picked out the night prior. You came downstairs and we all had breakfast. From there you wanted to go outside and play while you waited. We were calling the school bus the "Yellow Submarine." You kept saying, "When is the yellow submarine going to come!"

Over the weekend prior you enjoyed playing with my old skateboard at Nana's house. You asked her if you could take it home to Maine, but she preferred that you leave it in Mass for you to play with when you come down. You asked Mom and I on the way home from Mass if it would be OK for you to buy a skateboard with your own money that you had saved. The next day you picked out a Spiderman board at Target.

SO, this first day of school morning you were playing on your board, while waiting for the bus and BINGO, right off the board and onto your elbow! Mom got you a band-aid and we decided you we would simply wait rather than play on your board!

We saw the bus start down the street and I had butterfly's in my stomach. It approached and door swung open. You gave me and mom a hug and kiss and you hopped right on.
No tears or anything like this at all. You just hopped on the bus and off you went. Mom and I were both teary as the bus pulled away. It struck me how much confidence I have in you. You have a good head on your shoulders and I truly believe you can do anything you want to. I don't think this is true of everyone, but I think its true of you.

Mom emailed your teacher after the first day to find out how you did. This is what your teacher wrote to Mom: "I'm glad you e-mailed - I don't mind the questions at all! I think JD had a good first day - he is a terrific listener, and he was a big help in our room. I also picked up that he is very observant, and he did wonderfully sharing and getting along with the other kids. I'm very happy to have him in our room - he is a sweetheart, as I'm sure you already know :)"

I would say that about sums it up.

"I was Born in a Small Town"

We started out Labor Day weekend on Friday night with JD's first soccer practice in Berwick. Coach Adam and I are coaching your team and there are about 11 kids. Almost all of them are girls! Only three boys, Owen, Ethan and you. Friday night we met down at the Hussey school and began to kick around the ball. You were an excellent listener as were most of the kids that night. I am looking forward to this season even more now than I was before the practice that evening. We seem to have great kids and (So Far) pleasant parents.

The next day, JD, Adam and I went out for morning bike ride after breakfast. JD and I had planned on going down to Junction road because there was a dirt bike trail he wanted to explore. I put Ad on the back of Mom's mountain bike and off we went! JD you are riding you bike like its second nature at this point. You ride one handed, pop little wheelies, and stand on the middle bar with both feet while riding. Its very fun to watch and it reminds me of doing similar tricks when I was younger. I am working with you now on a, "Kick out" and an "Endo."

Adam, you love to ride on the back of the bike. You sit so content and sometimes tickle my back (on purpose) when we ride. When you get a reaction out of me you laugh and laugh. For this trip you had your bag of "Sun Chips" with you to keep you entertained. You LOVE to carry bags of food with you anywhere you can. We got quite a few smiles from passers by as we made our way along on our trip. You must have looked like you were at the movie snacking while JD and I peddled along. It doesn't seem like long ago that I was carting JD around in that little bike seat. I'm sure you will be riding your bike along side us before I know it.

I have to say that I love the age you are at right now, Ad. You're so little and impressed by the smallest things. I can put my whole hand on your torso and tickle you. You have the biggest, brightest smile I have ever seen. It reminds me of my friend Jim' s smile. It immediately makes you happy and brightens up a room. You have come into your own sense of humor too. You truly make jokes and find them so funny. You follow JD around like a little brother does, but you also take the leadership role during some of your interactions. You give me a hug, kiss and high five before I leave for work every day, and before bed every night. We started this routine with JD when he was your age and you have kept it going. This morning in fact, I was running a little late and was rushing out the door. I yelled, "Bye Ad", and you came running over with your arms extended for a hug. You started my day off great and I thought about that hug on my way to work. You and I truly connect just as I do with JD. You are a special boy.

ANYWAY! We went on this trip and the dirt road was not what we expected. We got about 100 feet in, and we came to a stream in a small ditch. No big deal, we crossed it after a few minutes and got to the other side. On the other side was a trail that had not been kept well. We had to turn around, cross the stream again and head out of the woods. It was fun while it lasted! From here we went toward South Berwick for another mile or so. This was probably the longest bike ride that JD has taken, and you did SO well! Adam proceeded to chomp on his chips, "OOH and AHH" at "Birdies" and tickle me on the way home. It was a nice, relaxing, ride.

The next day Mom, Az and the three of us went to Massachusetts for a cookout at Caufs on Sunday and Nana's on Monday. We arrived at Caufs around 2:30 so we could spend some time with the Caulfields before everyone else arrived. Riley is a few months younger that Ad and she is beautiful.
Soon enough a whole bunch of other people arrived. Jim and his family, Chris and his, Mikey, Kiki, the Kanes and plenty of others. It was such a fun night. All of my friends from back home just adore both of you and you both feel the same about them. JD you played with Bryan who is 9 days older than you, as well as Jordan, Jamie, and Casey. You guys were running all over, in and out and all of you were up very late! I had just as much fun watching you play with them as I did spending time with my friends. Times like that make me wish we stayed around..

The next day was lots of fun too. Meg, Greg and the kids came to Nan's as did Gram and Grampie and Grampie B. JD, you spent most of the time playing on my old skateboard. We also put the TV in for Nana, played ball and spent some nice time talking and waking up together in the morning. Adam, you were playing with a push toy outside and climbing all over chairs and couches inside!

David and Livy played with us almost all of the afternoon. This is the first time I was able to see Dave so animated. He was also climbing everywhere it was so fun to see him so mobile. Liv and I were able to spend some time together too. Her time means a lot to me and she is my only niece and she couldn't be more special. I love her personality and that little twinkle in her eye. I also enjoy seeing her giving my sister a run for her money. She picked up right where I left off!

On our trip back home to Maine, I was sad to leave. Millis is my home. My comfort zone and it always will be. A place where I can truly exhale. Like in the song "Small Town" where Mellancamp talks about all the little aspects of a small town that go unnoticed or are taken for granted. It was nice to come home with everyone and spend time in a place where, "People let you be just who you who to be."
